TONG Kai Yu, Raymond

Professor Raymond Kai-Yu Tong is a distinguished leader in the field of Biomedical Engineering and has been a Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) since 2014. He established Hong Kong’s first Biomedical Engineering Department, focusing on innovation, practical applications, and regulatory processes. His contributions to research and education have earned him numerous prestigious accolades, CUHK's highest teaching honour. His global recognition as one of the Top 10 Global Ageing Influencers, acknowledged by both the industry and Ageing Asia at the World Ageing Festival in Singapore, and his election as a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) in 2022, Best Teacher Award in 2021 and the University Education Award in 2022, underscore his significant impact on the biomedical engineering field. He was also named one of Hong Kong’s Ten Outstanding Young Persons in 2013. He and his team have established three startup companies as co-founder: Mind Control Technology Limited (2017), Hopebotics Ltd (2021), and Hope4Care Ltd (2022).

Main Research Interest

Rehabilitation Robotic Systems: Development of robotic systems that assist in rehabilitation therapies, enabling patients to perform movements with robotic support for improved recovery. (Hand of Hope, Hopebotics, XoMuscle, XoBrace)

 

Neuroengineering: Exploration of engineering techniques to understand and influence the functioning of the central and peripheral nervous systems, promoting advancements in medical devices.

 

Neuroimaging and Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI): Utilization of imaging techniques such as MRI and EEG to visualize brain function and structure, facilitating the development of BCI technologies for enhancing communication and control in patients.

 

Noninvasive Brain Stimulation: Application of painless electrical stimulation methods to modulate neuronal activity, aimed at therapeutic interventions for neurological disorders.Neurorehabilitation: Integration of robotics, brain stimulation, and physical exercise to enhance recovery and functional improvement in individuals poststroke or brain injury.

 

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES): Use of electrical currents to activate muscles and restore motor function, particularly in patients with mobility impairments.

 

AI and Machine Learning in Imaging: Implementation of AI/ML techniques for the segmentation and classification of clinical images, enhancing diagnostic efficiency in medical settings.
